Steve Mowry is our senior engineer. He has been designing transducers for the audio industry since 1995. He began with BS and MS Degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rhode Island with Highest Distinction. He has worked at BOSE, TC Sounds, Acoustic Systems Inc., and P. Audio Systems Co. before coming to S. M. Audio Engineering. Steve Mowry began his professional transducer-engineering career at BOSE Corp. as an R&D Engineer III within the Transducer R&D group (TRES). At BOSE, Steve was initially responsible for supporting the OEM Division whose customers included GM, Nissan, Honda, VW, Mazda, and IBM. After a reorganization of the Transducer Group at BOSE in 1996, Steve was reassigned to support the Component Audio (Home & Hi-Fi) Division. In 1998, Steve joined an OEM subwoofer and competition car audio transducer manufacturer in San Diego, CA as Chief Engineer. That company supplied transducers to ECLIPSE F10, SunFire, and several small companies that distributed after market transducers and systems. Steve left for Asia in 1999 to work as Manager of R&D for a medium sized OEM transducer and system manufacturer in Penang, Malaysia. In Malaysia, Steve supported transducer Design and Development for customers including Philips, RCA/Thompson, Polk Audio, JBL, and several smaller companies marketing systems internationally. Steve then joined the A-TON Acoustics Group as Director of Engineering for the A-TON Acoustics Group, with headquarters in Bangkok. After his contact expired he decided to join S. M. Audio Engineering. With almost seven years of experience working with customers utilizing transducer and system manufacturing facilities within Asia, S. M. Audio Engineering has come to the realization that technical engineering services are not the only elements of effective new transducer and system development projects. Steve is an active member of the Boston Chapter of the Society of Concurrent Product Development and also has earned a BS Degree in Business Administration from Bryant College in Smithfield, Rhode Island. S. M. Audio Engineering practices and utilizes Concurrent Engineering; Design for Manufacturability, Assembly and Reliability; Failure Modes and Effects Analysis; Quality Function Deployment; and Design of Experiments as development project management tools. For more detailed information, you can read Steve\'s Resume. You can contact Steve at steve@s-m-audio.com.

Presentations and technical papers are the heart of AES Conventions. Ranging from illuminating ("Advanced Watermarking and Its Applications) to impenetrable ("The Influence of Viscothermal Effects on Calibration Measurements in a Tube"), AES papers cover new research and technology on every conceivable audio topic. Due to limited time (and the fact that all papers are available as AES preprints at http://www.aes.org/, while audio cassettes of presentations and workshops can be ordered from http://www.mobiltape.com/), our coverage was primarily confined to product exhibitions and demos. However, we made an exception for the inspired tutorial and technology round-up delivered by Dr. Floyd E. Toole of Harmon International Industries, Inc., who clearly and eloquently presented the results of his extensive research into "The Acoustics and Psychoacoustics of Loudpeakers and Rooms—the Stereo Past and the Multichannel Future."
| Tackling rampant misconceptions based on bad science (which he termed "BS" for short), Dr. Toole held a large conference room spellbound for an uninterrupted 2½ hours as he explained key points about his methodology and findings. Charting the differences in subjective ratings between sighted and blind speaker evaluations, he identified the factors which, when properly controlled, yield subjective data. that closely tracks measured speaker performance. Dr. Toole went on to identify the performance characteristics of various speaker designs, and their interaction with room effects. |
After completing his presentation, Dr. Toole enjoyed a colleagial exchange with Laurence Fincham, who replaced Tom Holman at the helm of Lucasfilm Ltd\'s THX Division.
| Not all AES presentations enjoy equally prestigious venues, as we can see in one of the Convention\'s hallway "Poster Presentation" alternatives to dedicated room sessions. Here, Mitsukazu Kuze of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. explains, to anyone who happens by, his company\'s research in developing Piezo-electric super-tweeters for DVD-Audio. |
